Top Remaining MLB Free Agents

Updated: Jan 3

As we are entering 2025 it is valuable to see what remaining MLB free agents are still out there. Let’s understand why they are still there, why they are valuable, and where they might go. Teams are working to close out their rosters and make sure they are making the right moves to solidify their championship rosters. Now let’s dive into it.

  1. Alex Bregman - Top landing spots: Tigers, Cubs, Blue Jays

Bregman is currently the top man on the market and can add a huge advantage to any team in the market for him. In the past 3 seasons, he has a batting average of .260 and averaging 25 home runs. A talented 3B who has solid postseason experience. He is only 30 and right in the strong prime of his career. I think the Tigers are pulling away with the push for Bregman because they show signs of a strong build. Also, the only competition in the AL Central is the Guardians. There are a few options but we shall see how the market develops.

  1. Pete Alonso - Top Landing Spots: Mets, Giants, Astros

Next is a similar situation to the one Bregman currently faces. Alonso is looking for a large deal and wants to be locked up just as much as the other large stars. The last 3 years he is averaging a .244 average and 40 home runs. He isn’t a guy who will create a strong batting average but he creates change with his big swings. He also brings an average glove at first base. I think he will stay with the Mets if they are willing to pay him. If the Mets don’t push forward I can see the Giants being a surprising team. They need a star to get their team back to the playoffs and it could help bring in more star power!

  1. Max Scherzer - Top Landing Spots: Tigers, Mets, Diamondbacks, Orioles

Do people want a 40-year-old pitcher with injury problems in the last few years? I will go with absolutely. Scherzer is still dominant when he is on the mound. The last time he pitched above a 4.00 ERA was in 2011. Last year heonly pitched 9 games but still maintained a solid performance throughout. I think he needs to go to a team that isready to win. The Tigers could be interesting if they grab Bregman as well. If the Mets lose Alonso they might avoid adding more to the cap with an older pitcher. The other two options could be effective if the first two fall through.

As the offseason continues we will see various other changes as other deals drop. Since there are only certain teams in the market for some high market players it could create changes if one player signs with a team they are not projected to. We will continue to dive into more players and understand what makes a connection valuable.
