2025 Oscar Nominations Overall Review

I am no movie critic, I tend to prefer the more relaxed and fun movies instead of the historical and drama-featured movies. Recently I decided why not watch all of the movies up for best picture at the Oscars. It helps me grab a better understanding of how different variations of movies are created, plus I get to watch some of top top-rated movies of the year. This year I am excited to sit down and watch all of the movies and write my honest opinion about each movie. This year we have ten various choices in the category and before seeing any of these I can give a basic breakdown of my thoughts.

Out of the ten, I want to pre-rank each movie from a 1 (not interested/excited) to a 10 (Interested/Excited). Then create a short pitch of that feeling. We can counter that after I watch the movie. I have just watched the trailer of each movie while writing this overview blog.

The ten movies are: Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, The Substance, Wicked!

Anora (7). When this movie first came out I was interested in the concept of the movie, but not something I would go to the theater for. Could be a darker rom-com which could be entertaining but also could fall off with a weak plot.

The Brutalist (9). This one is making me giggle with excitement! I did not hear much about it before but, I think it could provide interesting story telling about a historical topic. This does have a 3.5 hour run time, which could be tiring but if the plot is strong this could be a top movie for me.

A Complete Unknown (5). This of course has been a popular movie because of Timothée Chalamet and it being a biopic with Bob Dylan. I do not know if I am convinced. I have a tough time with biopic movies because if the history of the person could be strong but if the plot of the movie is weak it puts a bad taste in the mouth.

Conclave (6). I am having a tough time placing this movie on the scale. There is a possibility it could be a top pick or it could lead to a middle-of-the-road movie. The drama and mystery aspect of this movie could be the strong leader of this. The concern of this movie is it will be slow and dark over intense. I do enjoy movies that portray the church and how it operates, so the interest is there.

Dune: Part Two (8). The first Dune was a slow burn but was a strong film and one that was exciting. My friends who have seen this movie have stated that it create more action and intense environment then the first one. I will state before I watch these movies that I do not think this will win best picture but could win other awards.

Emilia Pérez (3). The only thing I know about this movie is that it was a surprise it was nominated for so many awards. I am not to excited about this movie going in. The point of the movie seems confusing and I am just not sure about it. The cast is strong which is why I have some hope!

I’m Still Here (5). For the per reason as I am still not sure what this is about and I am confused about this movie I am indifferent. I feel like my opinion can be swayed either way with this movie once I gain a better understanding of the movie. The focus is a women discovering details about her husbands death and what happened that lead to it.

Nickel Boys (7). From the trailer I believe this will be a visual masterpiece but might be slow to get through the story. I am interested for the historical aspect and think that’s what could make this a strong movie. Including history from the Jim Crow South could be interesting to see how they bring out those details.

The Substance (1). This Movie has a thriller/horror aspect to it which is something that pushes me away. It is about an aging star using a syrum to look younger which creates various effects on it. This is a concept that is talked about a lot with people but something that nobody believes is real. So seeing it on the big screen could be interesting.

Wicked (6). I have been skeptical about this movie for a long time because I loved the broadway version and the movie was a tad worrisome. From initial reviews I think my first opinions are wrong but I have to watch it myself to see if that is true. Everyone knows defying gravity is a fantastic song and pushed this movie to the top.

Overall, I am excited to watch these movies and see if my opinion changes on the movies. I will provide a basic overview in future articles, plus giveaway some spoilers of the movie.
